Unrealized Third-Person Horror Sequel in Vietnam Almost Became a Reality

Sledgehammer Games had an ambitious concept for a third-person horror title set in Vietnam, which was ultimately shelved to prioritize Modern Warfare 3.

Sledgehammer Games has worked on multiple versions of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 as of 2023. However, many fans were more eager to see their original proposal for a third-person horror game set in a frightening interpretation of Vietnam.

Glen Schofield, one of Sledgehammer’s founders who departed the studio in 2018, described the project’s ambitious vision. “We sought to create a terrifying portrayal of Vietnam, blending intense personal battles with elements you’d never have witnessed before. Our idea included navigating dark tunnels, where encounters were shrouded in fear and uncertainty,” Schofield explained.

Unfortunately, the project, dubbed ‘Fog of War’, was sidelined due to turmoil at Infinity Ward, which compelled Activision to redirect Sledgehammer’s resources to complete Modern Warfare 3 instead.

“We wanted to make a scary version of Vietnam,” Schofield said. “And not just scary, we wanted intense battles that were personal, but stuff you’ve never seen before.”

In a sequence depicted by Schofield, players would navigate through a jungle where they witness a burning B-52 Bomber descending from the sky, adding a level of suspense and excitement typical of horror narratives.

Ultimately, fans are left to ponder what could have been had this gripping project come to fruition.
