Potential Docking Feature for PS6 Handheld Console
Rumors suggest that the upcoming PlayStation 6 handheld could be dockable, similar to the Nintendo Switch, with enhanced performance capabilities.
On August 27, a gaming industry leaker shared new specifications for the upcoming PlayStation 6 portable console, suggesting the inclusion of a docking feature. This dock would potentially allow the unit to connect to a television and operate at a higher clock speed. The leaker drew parallels to the dock for the Nintendo Switch 2, highlighting the differences in specifications between the two modes on the PS6.
While Sony has yet to officially announce details about its next-generation PlayStation console, speculation continues to grow. Previous reports from July indicated that both the PS6 and the next Xbox would employ AMD technology for a third consecutive generation, particularly focusing on AMD’s RDNA 5 graphical architecture. Furthermore, both consoles are rumored to launch in 2027, although no firm release dates are confirmed at this time.
Insights from More Leaks
In a subsequent video related to the anticipated specs of the PS6 handheld, the leaker, known as Moore’s Law Is Dead, provided additional insights. This version of the PS6 is codenamed ‘Canis’ and could include a dock to enhance clock speeds significantly, potentially boosting performance from 1.2 GHz to approximately 1.65 GHz. The PS6 handheld, when docked, could achieve over twice the ray tracing performance of its predecessor while offering slightly less in rasterization performance unless games are specifically optimized for it.
The PS6 handheld is also expected to be backward compatible with PS5 and PS4 games, powered by a 6-core AMD Zen 6 processor featuring integrated RDNA 5 graphics. Additionally, it may provide about 60% more computational bandwidth compared to the upcoming ROG Xbox Ally X, which incorporates a Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor.
As Sony has not officially unveiled its plans for the next console, consumers are advised to approach these rumors cautiously. Meanwhile, developments concerning the next-gen Xbox indicate it might surpass the PS6 in terms of power, leaving questions about how the next console generation will unfold.
