Bill Gates Expresses Concerns Over Intel's Struggles and Pat Gelsinger's Departure

Bill Gates shares his dismay about Intel's decline, reflecting on Pat Gelsinger's presidency and the challenges facing the chipmaker.

As I grow weary of weekly discussions critiquing Intel’s performance, it’s hard to overlook how significant industry figures like Bill Gates continue to address the company’s failures. In a recent conversation with the Associated Press, Gates expressed his astonishment that Intel has lost its competitive edge. He noted, “[Intel is] kind of behind in terms of chip design and they are kind of behind in chip fabrication. And both of those are very capital intensive. They missed the AI chip revolution…”

Gates had high hopes when Pat Gelsinger resumed leadership at Intel in 2021, but after his exit late last year, those aspirations seem dim. Gates reflected, “I was hoping for his sake, for the country’s sake that he would be successful. I hope Intel recovers, but it looks pretty tough for them at this stage.”

Gates acknowledged that while referring to the “country’s sake” might be an exaggeration, there is truth in it considering Intel’s role as America’s primary advanced chip producer. With TSMC being drawn to build in Arizona, Intel’s outsourcing of production has been a point of concern.

Despite these challenges, Intel claims that its upcoming 18A node is still on schedule for Panther Lake laptop chips this year. However, as Gates pointed out, the road ahead does appear daunting.
