World of Warcraft: Upcoming Expansion Introduces Essential Features from Add-Ons

Blizzard is set to implement new features in the World of Warcraft: Midnight expansion, drawing inspiration from popular add-ons.

World of Warcraft game director Ion Hazzikostas confirmed that the upcoming Midnight expansion will include a variety of features drawn from popular add-ons, such as boss timers, additional nameplate options, and damage meters. This move aligns with Blizzard’s ongoing objective to reduce players’ dependence on external modifications.

During Gamescom’s Opening Night Live, Blizzard unveiled the first look at World of Warcraft: Midnight, marking the game’s 11th expansion. Along with showcasing revitalized zones from the classic Burning Crusade expansion, new areas named Harandar and the Voidstorm have been introduced. Players will also have access to the Haranir, an allied race available to both the Alliance and Horde, as well as a new specialization for Demon Hunters called Devourer, which provides an additional mid-range DPS option.

Hazzikostas, together with associate game director Paul Kubit, discussed during a panel at Gamescom the planned advancements in the systems and interface for the Midnight expansion. Hazzikostas highlighted that existing add-ons, like Deadly Boss Mods and Details, are being used as templates for forthcoming features, including a reliable boss timer and damage meters designed to guide players during combat.

The goal of these modifications for Midnight is to enhance player experience by offering crucial combat information without relying on add-ons. Additionally, Hazzikostas noted that Blizzard aims to improve the overall experience for both new and returning players, introducing a mode to help re-acquaint players without overwhelming inventory or quest log pressures.

For those interested in experiencing the new features firsthand, opportunities to join the upcoming beta are available through pre-ordering the World of Warcraft: Midnight Epic Edition or by signing up on Blizzard’s website. The official launch is anticipated in 2026, as players await new features’ rollout.
