In a recent statement, Feng Ji, the CEO of Game Science, clarified that while development on Black Myth: Wukong is currently set aside for the forthcoming Black Myth: Zhong Kui, fans should not consider Wukong’s journey finished. Ji emphasized that work on Zhong Kui represents a fresh beginning, but they will revisit Wukong in some form, although whether it will be an expansion or a standalone sequel remains undecided.
Although fans anticipated an expansion announcement during the Gamescom Opening Night Live, the event showcased a first look at Black Myth: Zhong Kui instead. This upcoming title is planned as a single-player action RPG set for a later release on PC and contemporary consoles, and it draws on the rich tapestry of Chinese mythology. Zhong Kui, like Wukong, is a mythical figure with a legacy steeped in folklore.
Geoff Keighley, the host for Gamescom, described Zhong Kui as a “ghost-catching god who wanders between Hell and Earth.”
The Continuation of Wukong’s Legacy
Game Science has expressed openness to continuing Wukong’s narrative in the future. As Feng Ji disclosed on Weibo, the decision to pivot towards Zhong Kui followed a pivotal moment when co-founder Yang Qui urged him to explore new ideas rather than sticking to planned DLC content. This catalyst has led them to embark on the project that is now Black Myth: Zhong Kui.
Feng Ji further reassured fans about the timeless appeal of Journey to the West, the literary source that inspired Black Myth: Wukong, promising a return to Wukong’s story, crafted thoughtfully and compellingly, when circumstances permit.
For the time being, fans can engage in the adventures of the Monkey King, as Black Myth: Wukong was officially launched on August 20 for Xbox consoles, while the fate of a potential sequel remains an open question.
