Team Cherry has shared insights into the lengthy development of Hollow Knight: Silksong, which spanned seven years. Anticipated as one of the most significant indie games of 2025, a release date has recently been confirmed for the game, allowing eager fans to play in just two weeks after many years of speculation.

Although the game was initially planned as downloadable content for the original Hollow Knight, it evolved into a standalone title. This transformation is common in larger gaming franchises, as seen with Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Mirage. The game’s first appearance was at the Xbox 2022 summer showcase with a promise of a release before June 2023; fans were taken aback by Team Cherry’s recent date confirmation, two years later.

A Smooth Development Process

Typically, lengthy game development is associated with numerous challenges; however, according to Team Cherry Co-Founders Ari Gibson and William Pellen, their experience with Silksong was the opposite. During an interview with Bloomberg, they revealed that the extended development time was largely due to their enjoyment of the creative process. “It was never stuck or anything. It was always progressing. It’s just the case that we’re a small team, and games take a lot of time…” said Gibson. He humorously mentioned needing to stop sketching to avoid a 15-year development.

The positive vibes during the seven-year development cycle contrasts sharply with the often troubled tales from the gaming industry. Gibson’s need to restrain his enthusiasm suggests promising gameplay ahead for fans excited about Silksong’s expansive environment compared to the original game.

The commitment to quality and an open-ended development style promises players a rich gaming experience. Set for release on September 4 for PC and consoles, Hollow Knight: Silksong is primed to become a cherished title in the indie gaming scene.
