Roblox Updates Guidelines on Sexual Content Amid Lawsuit by Louisiana Attorney General

In response to a lawsuit alleging safety issues, Roblox has announced changes to its policies regarding inappropriate content and user moderation.

In light of a lawsuit from Louisiana that claims Roblox is a “breeding ground for sex predators,” the gaming platform is revising its policies regarding romantic and sexual content. The updated guidelines will forbid materials that merely suggest sexual actions, thereby enhancing user safety.

Roblox also plans to utilize technology to identify inappropriate behavior within experiences that otherwise comply with their guidelines. Access to around unrated experiences will be exclusively reserved for their developers. Furthermore, social hangouts that include personal spaces like bedrooms and bathrooms will only be accessible to users who have validated their age, confirming they are at least 17.

Matt Kaufman, Roblox’s Chief Safety Officer, stated, “While these settings do not currently violate our policies, we have noticed increased inappropriate conduct in these types of experiences, prompting stricter access for younger users.”

The changes come after Louisiana AG Liz Murrill characterized Roblox as being “overrun with harmful content and child predators.” Amidst increasing scrutiny over its moderation practices, US lawmaker Ro Khanna has urged Roblox to take further steps in safeguarding children and empowering parents.
