Windows 11 Update May Be Causing SSD and HDD Failures, Report Indicates

A new report suggests that the recent Windows 11 24H2 update might be linked to storage failures in various SSDs and HDDs.

A recent report raises concerns that the KB5063878 update for Windows 11 may lead to failures in SSDs and HDDs. According to Neowin, this update could render storage devices and their corresponding SMART metrics unreadable by the operating system.

The publication cites claims from an X post by user Necoru_cat, indicating that ‘Phison NAND controllers are particularly susceptible to issues, especially the DRAM-less models’ due to their vulnerability to lower write volumes.

Phison has acknowledged these claimed vulnerabilities in a statement, assuring that they are in communication with stakeholders to address concerns related to the KB5063878 and KB5062660 updates. They expressed commitment to product integrity and support for partners disruptive due to this update.

Several SSD models, such as

  • WD Blue SN5000,
  • Corsair MP510,
  • SK Hynix Platinum P41,
have been named as potentially affected. Users are advised to exercise caution and possibly delay installing this update until more information and fixes are available.

In light of recent updates, it seems prudent for users with the aforementioned drives to hold back on the installation of KB5063878 for now, especially given the prevalence of potential failures around this time.
