Rod Fergusson, previously at the forefront of Gears of War and Diablo, is now leading the BioShock franchise under 2K’s Cloud Chamber. This comes shortly after he departed from Blizzard Entertainment after contributing to the launch of Diablo 4 and managing its expansions. Notably, Fergusson has a rich history with the Gears of War series, having worked at both Epic Games and The Coalition.
Fans of BioShock have been anticipating a new entry in this philosophical shooter series, particularly following the 2013 release of BioShock Infinite. The development studio, Irrational Games, transitioned into the more modest Ghost Story Games, and the BioShock franchise was handed over to Cloud Chamber, established in 2019 by Kelley Gilmore, a former producer at Firaxis Games. Recent upheavals in the studio, including Gilmore’s departure, have resulted in delays for BioShock 4.
Fergusson’s appointment as the new “Head of BioShock” was revealed on Twitter, although it is confirmed that some staff changes—including layoffs—occurred during this transition. Known for his ability to rally struggling projects, Fergusson previously aided in bringing BioShock Infinite to its conclusion, earning him a reputation as a project “closer.”
While it is disappointing to hear of additional layoffs, Fergusson’s experience hopes to steer the BioShock franchise back on course. Fans should also keep an eye on Judas, a project from the original creator of BioShock, Ken Levine, now under development at Ghost Story Games.
