In the upcoming game Borderlands 4, lead character designer Nick Thurston reveals how the team is drawing unexpected inspiration from the well-known game Baldur’s Gate 3. Although the two titles belong to vastly different genres, the developers at Borderlands see opportunities to incorporate valuable insights from the two-year-old RPG.
Borderlands 4’s Unique Character Development Inspired by Baldur’s Gate 3
Thurston shared his perspectives in a conversation with Polygon, stating that the character builds in Borderlands 4 are set to be more diverse. He mentioned that playing RPGs offers him the chance to build characters in unique ways, and he aims for players to experience the same variety with the new game.
“I’m a min-maxer. When I play an action RPG, I want to hit the end game and be doing billions of damage, but I want to do it in the way I want to do. In many cases, previous characters in our franchise have focused too much on one thing. But I want each character to be able to be used in multiple ways.”
Translation: I want to maximize my effectiveness in games, and I believe our characters should be versatile.
With the anticipated release of Borderlands 4 on September 12, it seems the team is strategizing to leave room for surprises and enhanced replayability beyond what fans have experienced in prior installments.
