AMD Makes Significant Strides Against Intel in Desktop CPUs, Yet Struggles in Mobile Market

Recent data reveals that AMD has dramatically increased its presence in the desktop CPU market while still facing challenges in mobile segments.

The latest findings from Mercury Research indicate that AMD has captured 32.2% of the desktop CPU market share, a significant rise from 23% last year. This shift has resulted in Intel’s market share dropping from 77% to 67.8%, marking a notable downturn for the company within just a year. According to the report, “Last quarter, AMD made substantial gains as the desktop PC gaming market transitioned en masse to their new Granite Ridge processors, particularly the X3D models, leading to strong unit sales growth for AMD desktop CPUs.”

However, amidst these gains, AMD continues to face challenges in the mobile CPU market, where it holds only a small fraction of the share compared to Intel’s commanding 79.7%. Despite some advancements, the company’s share in mobile CPUs increased by a mere 0.3% year-on-year, a figure that likely doesn’t concern Intel.

INDUSTRY RESPONSES AND ADVANCEMENTS

AMD’s recent successes can also be linked to manufacturers like Razer adopting their Strix Point chips, yet, as noted, establishing a more significant foothold in the mobile segment could prove challenging. With ongoing issues such as shipment declines affecting Intel, AMD’s momentum in the desktop sector is palpable. As the company revels in its achievements, it recognizes the uphill battle ahead in diversifying and enhancing its mobile CPU offerings when facing established competitors.
