Gearbox Software has taken the outrageous claim of having 30 billion guns in Borderlands 4, surpassing the famously exaggerated claim of 87 bazillion guns from its predecessors. This declaration emerged from a recent post by the Epic Games Store, featuring insights from Art Director Adam May.
To give perspective, one billion equals 1,000 million, indicating that if you were to watch clips of every possible combination of weapons in Borderlands 4, it could theoretically take 45 years to view.
While the astounding number sounds great in marketing, practical handling of weapons may differ, ultimately being a mix of various random features rather than a completely unique experience for every gun.
Senior Project Producer Anthony Nicholson explains that the design of weapons differs based on the manufacturer, making their operation somewhat predictable. The team emphasizes closely matching visual elements with mechanical performance, ensuring that a gun’s design visually aligns with how it operates.
Nicholson humorously noted that they have implemented a ‘wall of guns’ concept similar to the one in The Matrix film to keep track of the varied designs. Ultimately, while the numbers are catchy, the logistics behind creating a cohesive look for a multitude of randomized weapons presents a genuine challenge.
