
Razer argues optical keyboards surpass Hall effect models in precision

I’ve been using a Hall effect keyboard for a considerable amount of time and understand that this switch type is currently favored by gamers. However, during a discussion with Razer’s product manager, Dexter Tan, he made a case for optical keyboards being superior.
Both switch types enable analog input, meaning they measure not just whether a key is pressed or not but also the depth of each press. This feature can enhance gameplay significantly, especially in racing games, by allowing for nuanced control of character acceleration or braking. It also enables a more traditional experience where players can dictate the actuation distance for each key to optimize their performance.
This technology facilitates rapid trigger action, letting users re-press a key immediately after beginning to release it—a feature that can dramatically improve reaction times in competitive scenarios.
Tan commented: “Magnets are a little unpredictable and hard to control,” which often results in inconsistencies with Hall effect switches. In contrast, optical switches utilize infrared light, which Razer claims is easier to manage and maintain consistent performance across different units.
Razer’s testing indicates that optical switches offer better measurement accuracy throughout the key press. The company’s findings claim that the physical dimensions of the optical switch’s cut-out are key to achieving precision, making it less prone to variability than magnetic systems.
