Marvel Rivals Director Addresses Controversy Over Game's 'Gooner' Reputation: A Nod to Comic Design
The creative director of Marvel Rivals clarifies the game's designs, emphasizing their roots in classic comic themes.
Marvel Rivals has earned a reputation for appealing to its players’ desires, with some calling it a ‘gooner game’. Creative Director Guangyun Chen recently addressed this label. He emphasized that the game’s design is deeply rooted in classic comic themes, featuring iconic skins like Mantis and Psylocke’s Vengeance, which he believes resonate with players.
Chen stated, “Because our design, as mentioned earlier, is inspired by classic comic themes, including some very outstanding skins like Mantis, and also Psylocke’s Vengeance, these all come from classic comic designs. We take those classic comic designs and create some more fashionable designs based on them, to gain players’ appreciation.”
Translation: Guangyun Chen elaborated that the designs reflect storied comic traditions, aiming for player appreciation rather than mere optics.
In the past, Marvel Rivals players have humorously expressed their love for certain character designs, which adds to the game’s lively community discourse. This adds to the notion that while stunning visuals play a significant role in attracting players, the underlying narrative and authenticity intrinsic to comic book lore must not be overlooked.
