Creative Director Discusses Balancing Marvel Rivals' DPS Roster

Insights on the future balance of character roles in Marvel Rivals as the team aims to address current disparities.

Marvel Rivals excels in its character selection, featuring a diverse roster that includes a shark-themed hero, a K-pop idol, and various iconic Marvel characters. However, the game faces a significant issue: a majority of its characters are Duelists, leading to a precarious balance.

Currently, Marvel Rivals hosts 41 characters, with 22 being Duelists, compared to 10 Vanguards and only 9 Strategists. This imbalance becomes especially pronounced in competitive scenarios where players can ban certain roles, leaving only a handful of options.

In a recent conversation with Rivals Assembled, creative director Guangyun Chen acknowledged the disparity and assured players that the team recognizes the need for a better balance among character types but noted that changes wouldn’t be implemented instantly.

“The whole process from confirming a hero roster to production and final release takes quite a long time. For example, at this point, the heroes we are currently deciding on are for a release slot next year.”

Chen emphasizes that while they are aware of the issue and will address it, the adjustments won’t come overnight. He pointed out, “We are paying attention to the problem and gradually working to solve it.”

To keep the game fresh, players can expect new characters, including Vanguards and Strategists in future releases. However, how quickly and effectively this balance can be restored remains to be seen, especially as damage-dealing characters often dominate player popularity.
