One of the First American Videogame Magazines is Now Accessible Online for Free

The Video Game History Foundation has made Computer Entertainer, an early American game magazine, available for public reading.

One of the earliest American videogame magazines, Computer Entertainer, which was published from 1982 to 1990, is now available online for free. The Video Game History Foundation has digitized the entire archive, making it accessible under a Creative Commons 4.0 license.

“Most console game magazines in the US went out of business during the 1983–84 industry crash… except this one,” notes the VGHF. “As a result, Computer Entertainer is one of the only sources for American reviews of classic games like The Legend of Zelda, Final Fantasy, and Super Mario Bros.

The magazine was essentially a newsletter run by Video Take-Out, a Los Angeles-based mail-order video games retailer, which provided one of the few reliable sources of American game release dates during that time.
