Developer Insights on Battlefield 6's Map Size Controversy
Battlefield 6's design director addresses the heated discussions surrounding the game's map dimensions, asserting that size is not the sole measure of quality.
‘Scale Is Not Everything’ - Battlefield 6 Developer Comments on Controversial Map Sizes
Battlefield 6’s design director Shashank Uchil has addressed the backlash regarding the map sizes in the recent beta phase, clarifying the rationale behind their dimensions. During an interview with VGC, Uchil explained, “We want to create maps catering to various player styles—infantry, tanks, helicopters, and jets…”
He noted that while feedback from participants has been predominantly favorable, concerns over map size are justified. Some players have likened the experience to the smaller maps found in Call of Duty’s gameplay, suggesting they lack the expansive feel typical in previous Battlefield titles.
Uchil stated emphatically, “Scale is not everything. Just because a map measures several kilometers doesn’t guarantee a good experience.” He emphasized a design philosophy that prioritizes functional gameplay over mere dimensions, suggesting that an oversized environment could detract from player interactions and the overall game atmosphere.
Despite some players’ critiques, Battlefield 6’s open beta is reportedly setting franchise records, suggesting positive anticipation for its full launch on October 10.
