Final Fantasy 14 Sees Significant Decline in Player Engagement
Square Enix's Q1 2025 report reveals a notable decrease in interest and profits related to Final Fantasy 14, highlighting ongoing challenges following the Dawntrail expansion.
On August 8, Square Enix released its Q1 2025 financial report, revealing that Final Fantasy 14 has suffered a decline in both gross sales and operational profits. This downturn in interest seems to align with a decrease in player retention, particularly following the controversial Dawntrail expansion.
The report indicates that since its launch, interest in Final Fantasy 14 has steadily waned. Various criticisms directed at the Dawntrail storyline and its pacing have contributed to the drop in monthly subscriptions. Particularly, this decline has been noted in North American data centers, with a failure to retain players in the wake of the last major expansion, Endwalker, which concluded the game’s significant story arc known as the Hydaelyn-Zodiark Saga. Furthermore, players have raised concerns about the offerings in the game’s Online Store, questioning the quality and pricing of several cosmetic items.
Financial Implications
The recent financial report aligns with claims from Yuzu, a Square Enix shareholder, who noted that gross sales from both Final Fantasy 14 and Dragon Quest 10 have dropped by 2.9 billion yen (approximately $19.6 million) compared to Q1 2024. These findings underscore the interdependence of Square Enix’s financial success with the flourishing of Final Fantasy 14, prompting calls for strategic measures to revitalize the MMORPG’s trajectory.
With these ongoing trends noted, player interest in Final Fantasy 14 remains sluggish, prompting measures like the reactivation of its housing demolition system earlier this year. As of now, players are still able to acquire housing on a per-server basis.
Despite these hurdles, the game recently released Patch 7.3, touted as Dawntrail’s narrative culmination. While initial reactions from players appear favorable, only time will determine how Final Fantasy 14 can reverse its fortunes heading into future expansions.
