Former Blizzard President Critiques Call of Duty's Future

Mike Ybarra, the ex-president of Blizzard, forecasts that Battlefield 6 will outperform Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, hinting at competitive improvements in the gaming landscape.

Mike Ybarra, the former president of Blizzard, recently expressed his expectations that Battlefield 6 will “boot stomp” Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 later this year. Ybarra, who was with Blizzard from 2019 until 2024, shared critical insights regarding the state of the Call of Duty franchise, suggesting it has not been performing well since 2016 due to various issues such as cheating and heavy user interface demands.

Ybarra remarked, “Battlefield will boot stomp CoD this year,” adding that the competition would push developers to enhance their work to improve titles. This sentiment reflects a belief that the competition from Battlefield 6 could invigorate the struggling Call of Duty series.

Despite these challenges, Activision remains confident, asserting that Call of Duty is “too big to fail.” Sources within the company indicated that even amidst intensifying competition, the Call of Duty franchise will likely continue to perform well.

Furthermore, data from SteamDB shows substantial interest in Battlefield 6, with its open beta reportedly attracting over 330,000 players. Meanwhile, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 is set to introduce anti-cheat measures, aiming to address one of the major complaints voiced by players.
