Tencent's Survival Game Faces Legal Challenges, Adjusts Content and Release Plans

Tencent appears to be taking significant measures to distance its upcoming survival game from potential legal disputes with Sony.

Tencent’s upcoming survival game, previously likened to Sony’s Horizon: Zero Dawn, is undergoing a strategic shift as it prepares to face legal scrutiny from the Japanese gaming giant. The Steam page for Light of Motiram has seen major updates, with substantial changes made to the game’s content in recent days to reduce similarities with Sony’s franchise.

Initially described as a world filled with colossal machines, the game now presents itself as a standard survival experience. The original depiction stressed the building of a base, technological advancement, and interactions with so-called ‘Mechanimals’. However, the latest revisions have removed much of this language, opting for a revised pitch centered on survival challenges in a natural wilderness setting instead.

Additionally, the release date for Light of Motiram has been pushed back to late 2027, a significant extension from its prior planned launch. As Tencent appears to be taking these steps, it underscores the pressure it likely feels in light of the ongoing lawsuit it faces from Sony regarding potential copyright infringement.

“In a world overrun by enormous machines, explore the vast open world, build your base of operations, advance technology, and face formidable foes,” was the original phrase on the Steam store, which has now shifted significantly. Tencent’s adjustments signal a response to Sony’s legal actions, as they aim to minimize any potential for further conflict. Image credit: Tencent.
