The Director of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Discusses Last-Minute Changes and Highlights on Motion Capture Actors
In a recent discussion, Guillaume Broche, the creative director of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, reflects on significant last-minute changes to the game's endings, crediting motion capture actors for their crucial contribution.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is potentially one of my top picks for the year, reassuring you that I mean this genuinely. It’s not surprising that creative director Guillaume Broche has expressed a fondness for deeply emotional narratives.
In a recent interview with BehindTheVoice, Broche revealed insights about the endings, emphasizing that the writing process was conducted simultaneously, and his preference leaned toward crafting stories that are not completely happy. He stated, “I knew I didn’t want [either ending] to be really ‘good’. I wanted some upsides and downsides to both.”

Broche also mentioned that there were two alternative closing scenes that ultimately didn’t make the final cut. In one of these, the characters Maelle and Verso struggled to communicate as they spoke over one another—an idea that appeared innovative at first but turned out poorly during the motion capture session. “It was very bad,” he reflected.
During production, the script changed dramatically. Broche requested motion capture actors Charlotte Hoepffner and Maxence Carzola to relearn the revised text with minimal prep time. He praised their efforts, claiming, “They saved the ending.”
