UK Lawmaker Introduces AI Clone, Promotes Engagement Despite Its Limitations

A UK politician presents an AI version of himself to enhance communication with constituents, though its effectiveness is questioned.

It’s 3 AM, and sleep eludes you. You’re yearning to discuss your MP’s favorite crisp flavor or their thoughts on reintroducing the death penalty. Thankfully, you can interact with an unsettling AI version of Mark Sewards, MP for Leeds South West and Morley. Although Sewards launched this AI clone to improve communication and demonstrate the potential of AI in various sectors, many might disagree with its utility.

Sewards stated that the AI revolution is upon us and should be embraced. However, anecdotal evidence suggests that the digital doppelganger primarily serves as a conduit for data collection, relaying inquiries and complaints to Sewards’ team rather than providing useful information.

During his launch, Sewards remarked, “The AI revolution is happening and we must embrace it.” However, users questioning the AI on its views regarding pressing issues received no satisfactory answers. The prototype’s sole revelation involved his interest in state education funding, a priority one would expect from a Labour MP.

Concerns have arisen over the implications of such AI initiatives, echoing worries that AI could mislead the public and influence policy under the guise of progress. Critics argue that while AI offers promise in various domains, it frequently falls short of expectations, as highlighted by the cataclysmic impacts on education and increasing misinformation.

Ultimately, AI Mark is perceived as a glorified data collection tool instead of an effective means for constituents to engage with their elected representative.
