Battlefield 6 Reveals Details on Skill-Based Matchmaking Implementation

Developers at Battlefield Studios discuss the integration of Skill-Based Matchmaking in Battlefield 6's multiplayer gameplay.

Developers from Battlefield Studios have clarified just how Battlefield 6 will incorporate Skill-Based Matchmaking (SBMM) into its multiplayer structure. Though in development for years, Battlefield 6 was officially unveiled recently and confirmed for an October 10 release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.

The long wait for concrete details about Battlefield 6 is over, with EA officially releasing the gameplay reveal and multiplayer trailers widely. Many of the anticipated changes from previous entries in the series were hinted at by rumors and community updates, but now players will get to try the game themselves in the upcoming Battlefield 6 beta test.

While some players are concerned about the role that SBMM will play in matchmaking, developers addressed these concerns during the multiplayer reveal event. According to a report by MP1st, SBMM will be present but won’t be the only factor determining matchmaking. Factors like ping, a player’s location, and server fullness will also be considered.

Battlefield 6 SBMM Will Not Be the Only Factor in Matchmaking

Developers indicated that the system’s prioritization would shift depending on the game mode. For example, in a large-scale mode like Conquest, keeping the server full would be prioritized over skill differences, whereas in modes like Team Deathmatch, skill could be given more weight.

Additionally, Battlefield 6 will feature alternatives to matchmaking, such as the Battlefield Portal, allowing players to browse experiences based on their preferences. Whether these elements outweigh concerns over SBMM remains to be seen as players engage in beta testing.
