GPD’s Latest Handheld Gaming PC Raises Eyebrows
The gaming world is intrigued by GPD’s newest product, the Strix Halo handheld PC, which intriguingly lacks an internal battery. This design choice leaves many wondering how practical this device will be for actual gaming.
The machine debuted during a demonstration that showcased its capabilities, but it also introduced a significant amount of confusion regarding its functionality. Unlike typical handheld devices, which offer easy portability with built-in batteries, the GPD Win 5 requires an external power source or battery attachment, prompting reflection on how this affects user experience.
During a detailed video clip of its unveiling, captured at a gaming convention in China, viewers noted that the gaming experience included high demand on power. For instance, while playing the visually intense game Black Myth: Wukong, the PC’s CPU consumption spiked to around 56W, with the GPU following closely at 55W.
Temperature Readings
Initial assessments highlighted that the device managed thermals reasonably well, reaching near 57 degrees Celsius at the highest points. However, some are concerned about the practicalities of carrying the required external power unit, especially during active gaming sessions.
Despite these innovations, the concept of a battery-less handheld may reduce its appeal when compared to other competitors that seamlessly integrate both power and portability. GPD aims to capitalize on this emerging category, but it’ll be interesting to see if the market responds positively.
GPD’s attempt to set itself apart with the Strix Halo marks a noteworthy step in handheld gaming technology, but only time will tell whether gamers embrace it or stick to more traditional formats.
