Devs at DICE have indicated that Battlefield 6 will adopt a grounded approach when it comes to in-game skins, aiming to define a distinct identity apart from Call of Duty. As fans anticipate the game’s launch on October 10, they are eager for insight into the upcoming cosmetic offerings.
Over the years, cosmetics have become a staple in multiplayer online gaming, especially within franchises like Call of Duty. From iconic characters such as Rambo to musicians like Snoop Dogg, Activision has embraced a wide range of character skins. However, the introduction of characters like Beavis and Butt-Head into Call of Duty 6: Black Ops has raised eyebrows among fans, sparking discussions about the suitability of such collaborations.
DICE’s Producer Alexia Christofi emphasized that while players enjoy self-expression through skins, it is crucial for the cosmetics to “feel grounded.” Moreover, Senior Producer David Sirland noted how the game’s class system influences character appearances, with features like the Ghillie material reserved for Recon classes to highlight differences. Sirland mentioned that although there are some flexible rules surrounding skins, any changes must fit within the game’s universe.
This commitment to authenticity may comfort players concerned that Call of Duty is moving toward more unrealistic, Fortnite-like skins. The studios face the challenge of maintaining immersive experiences in military-themed games while still engaging players with a variety of cosmetic options. With the release just around the corner, it remains to be seen what cosmetic collaborations are planned, although players can sign up for an open beta starting on August 7 to get an early taste of the game.
