Sales for Monster Hunter Wilds Plummet Following a Strong Start
Despite a historic launch, Monster Hunter Wilds has encountered a significant decline in sales, raising concerns about its future viability.
After its phenomenal debut, Monster Hunter Wilds has been facing a rapid decline in sales. Capcom has enjoyed a fantastic year in 2025, buoyed by the acclaim surrounding its Monster Hunter and Resident Evil franchises. However, this momentum appears to be dissipating.
Last February, Monster Hunter Wilds broke records, selling 8 million copies in just three days, becoming the fastest title for Capcom to achieve such a milestone. This impressive figure accounted for more than a third of the lifetime sales of Monster Hunter Worlds within its initial week, but the situation has changed dramatically since then.
According to Capcom’s Q1 FY 2025 financial report, sales for Monster Hunter Wilds plummeted to just 477,000 copies during the last quarter. This figure positions it as the second-lowest selling title in the report, surpassing only Monster Hunter Rise from 2021 by a margin of fewer than 90,000 units. Despite reaching a total of 10.58 million copies sold, the game’s sales have dwindled significantly since reaching the 10 million mark in April. Most sales have occurred within the first two months post-launch, with the subsequent months seeing an average that doesn’t even hit a fraction of the initial surge.
Declining Performance Post-Launch
While a sales decline following release is typically expected, the steep fall experienced with Monster Hunter Wilds has been eye-opening. Player feedback has identified the root causes of discontent, highlighting issues like poor technical performance—especially on PC—and a slow rollout of updates and new content. Consequently, Monster Hunter Wilds has reportedly lost 98% of its player base on Steam.
Uncertainty looms over the future of the game and how Capcom intends to rectify the situation moving forward. Nevertheless, optimistic fans have news to look forward to: during the Nintendo Direct on July 31, it was confirmed that a new Monster Hunter installment is set for release in 2026, targeting Switch 2, Xbox Series X, PS5, and PC platforms.
