'We're Not Developing a GTA': Insights on Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2's Design Direction

The developers of Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 speak about their intention to create a compact but richly detailed world rather than an expansive open world.

After a long wait, the anticipation for Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 is back in full swing. The developers from The Chinese Room have been opening up about what players can expect from this upcoming title.

In a discussion with Game Informer, art director Ben Matthews clarified the vision behind the game, stating, “We’re not creating GTA; this isn’t a vast, sprawling game where the horizon is your limit.” Instead, they aim to deliver a detailed, immersive experience centered on a smaller, more intricate environment.

Matthews emphasized that the goal is to favor depth over breadth, where players can deeply explore rich details in the game world rather than merely traversing a large empty space. The philosophy of “quantity of detail over scope” highlights their commitment to making every inch engaging.

As the October release date approaches, excitement continues to build around how this approach could redefine the expectations for RPGs, echoing the successful design principles seen in titles like Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, known for its detailed environments and miniaturized maps packed with meaningful interactions.
