YouTube Updates Its Policy on Strong Profanity in Videos

YouTube has revised its approach to strong profanity in monetized videos, enabling creators to speak more freely without risking demonetization.

In 2022, YouTube implemented a policy that led to demonetization for videos featuring strong profanity within the first seven seconds. This left many content creators frustrated by the ambiguous enforcement. Recently, YouTube acknowledged the conflicting outcomes of that guideline and adjusted its approach. Moderate profanity, such as terms like asshole and bitch, will now be allowed without affecting monetization, while strong profanity, including terms like fuck, can also feature earlier in videos without the fear of immediate demotion in ads. YouTube’s Connor explained that the decision came in light of advertisers’ changing expectations regarding ad placement and profanity in content. Creators still must exercise caution; frequent use of strong language could still trigger limitations or complete demonetization in specific contexts, such as titles and thumbnails.
