Xbox Implements Age Verification in the UK, Restricting Social Features for Younger Users

Microsoft's Xbox is launching an age verification process in the UK to restrict social features for younger players. This follows the introduction of the UK's Online Safety Act.

The UK has recently enacted the Online Safety Act, and in response, Xbox is implementing new age verification measures. Despite 400,000 signatures being collected to reverse it, the UK government is moving forward.

Unlike Discord, which requires verification for certain servers, Xbox’s new 18+ moderation cannot be circumvented with tricks. players who claim to be 18 years or older while logging into Xbox Live with a Microsoft account will receive prompts to verify their age.

Here’s how players can confirm their identities:

  • Age estimation with webcam
  • ID Verification
  • Credit card check
  • Mobile number verification

Tools like Yoti will handle the age estimation for Xbox, providing a more secure method compared to previous attempts through other platforms.

Starting early next year, players in the UK will need to complete this verification to maintain full access to social features like voice and text chats and game invites on Xbox. If a player chooses not to verify their age, they will still be able to play games, but won’t access any social features.

This process may eventually extend to other regions as Microsoft evaluates additional strategies. The effort aims to keep younger audiences safeguarded while navigating the complexities of gaming online.
