Atari Completes Acquisition of Thunderful Group for Over $5 Million

Atari has successfully acquired a majority stake in Thunderful Group, enhancing its portfolio with multiple popular game franchises.

Atari has engaged in an acquisition trade amounting to over $5 million, establishing itself as the primary stakeholder of Thunderful Group AB, a Swedish video game holding entity housing five development studios and several publishers. This strategic move equips Atari with control over notable titles like the Lost in Random series and the SteamWorld franchise.

Originally, Thunderful was established in 2017 as the parent company of two indie game studios, Zoink and Image & Form. Zoink, which started in 2010, gained traction with its success in 2021 through the dice-based combat game Lost in Random. Image & Form has an even longer history, founded in 1997 and gaining recognition with the release of SteamWorld Tower Defense in 2010.

Atari’s acquisition involves securing 82% of Thunderful’s shares through a subscription agreement priced at 50 million Swedish krona, approximately $5.17 million USD. This deal awaits shareholder approval in late August, and aims to extend Atari’s reach in the European gaming domain, as stated by its CEO, Wade Rosen. This acquisition follows Atari’s previous deal with Intellivision in 2024. If successful, it could lead to the acquisition of 20 game franchises, including well-known titles like Vampire’s Fall and Islanders.

Under Rosen’s leadership, Atari has made extensive moves to broaden its business footprint. Recent years have seen the company expand its offerings, adding modern consoles compatible with its retro game library.
