Dead Space Creator Glen Schofield Considers Stepping Away from Game Directing
Glen Schofield, known for his work on Dead Space, reflects on his struggles to secure funding for his upcoming project and hints at possibly directing his last game.
Glen Schofield has announced his potential retirement from directing due to challenges in securing funding for his new horror project, which he has been developing over the past eight months. In an update on LinkedIn, he mentioned, “Maybe I’ve directed my last game.”
He described the game as a new take on the horror genre, aiming for a budget around $17 million but has faced pressure to lower that figure significantly in recent meetings. Despite positive responses from various investors, Schofield found the ongoing changes in the gaming industry daunting, stating, “People loved the concept, but the numbers keep dropping.”
“Last month, we decided to walk away. Some ideas are better left untouched than done cheap,” he said, reflecting on his team’s efforts, which included a talented crew based in both the US and the UK.
As he reflects on his career, Schofield complements his experience with struggles in finding support even with his previous success with Dead Space. With shifts in industry priorities and project funding becoming more scarce, he laments, “With the industry on pause, AAA feels like it’s a long ways away.”
Schofield is also facing personal consequences, as his daughter, who contributed to the project, is now looking for a new opportunity after being let go from her position. He concluded, expressing gratitude to fans, “If so, thank you for playing my games.”
