Revealing New Sales Figures for the Horizon Series

Recent sales data for the Horizon franchise has emerged following Sony's legal actions against Tencent Games.

New sales numbers for the Horizon franchise have come to light following Sony’s lawsuit against Tencent Games. The series began with the release of Horizon Zero Dawn in 2017, featuring Aloy, a young nomadic warrior navigating a post-apocalyptic landscape rife with robotic creatures and tribal conflicts. The franchise expanded with the sequel, Horizon: Forbidden West (2022), a VR offshoot called Horizon Call of the Mountain (2023), and plans for the child-friendly LEGO Horizon Adventures (2024).

This week brought renewed attention to the franchise amid an announcement regarding Sony’s legal action against Tencent over Light of Motiram, which bears striking resemblances to the Horizon universe, including its art style, mechanized wildlife, and a similar protagonist.

According to leaked legal documents from Sony, the Horizon franchise has exceeded 38 million copies sold globally, a notable increase of 6 million since the last report in May 2023, when sales were at 32 million units.

Furthermore, Sony’s lawsuit asserts that Tencent developed Light of Motiram while having knowledge of the Horizon series without seeking permission to use its intellectual property. They are pursuing damages of up to $150,000 for each instance of infringement and are seeking an injunction against the game’s release as well as the destruction of promotional materials.

In light of this ongoing legal situation, it remains clear that Sony is actively expanding the Horizon universe as they develop the next installment in the series, which is anticipated to continue Aloy’s journey following the events of Horizon Forbidden West and the Burning Shores DLC. Additionally, plans are underway for a live-action adaptation of Horizon Zero Dawn, alongside a multiplayer game set in the franchise’s world.
