Sumo Digital Shifts Focus to Partner IPs, Discontinuing Original Game Development

Sumo Digital has announced its decision to halt original game development, redirecting efforts entirely toward partnerships with other studios.

Summary

  • Sumo Digital will shift from original game development to partnering with other studios.
  • This decision follows layoffs affecting 15% of the workforce last summer.

Sumo Digital will no longer develop original games and will instead focus on collaborating with other studios. This announcement comes after the studio laid off 15% of its staff last summer, resulting in approximately 250 job cuts.

Traditionally known for its collaborative efforts, Sumo Digital has contributed to various major projects, including Xbox’s Crackdown 3, Sony’s LittleBigPlanet 3, and Sackboy: A Big Adventure. Additionally, the company has previously supported significant titles such as Hogwarts Legacy and Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.

Following this strategic shift, Sumo will concentrate solely on developing games in cooperation with external studios, transitioning away from creating its own original titles. According to a statement from Sumo Digital’s leadership, “After careful consideration, we have made the strategic decision to focus Sumo Digital exclusively on development services for partners.”

Despite the closure of its original game development sector, Sumo Digital’s future in the gaming industry appears promising as it redirects its expertise toward collaborations with various partners.
