Netflix Utilizes AI for Visual Effects in New Show, The Eternaut
Netflix has started using AI-generated special effects in its original series, marking a significant shift in production practices.
Netflix has taken a remarkable step in its production of The Eternaut, an Argentina-based original series, using artificial intelligence to produce visual effects. According to Ted Sarandos, Netflix’s Co-CEO, AI tools allowed the creation of stunning effects in a remarkably quick manner, making it financially viable for the show’s budget.
“Using AI-powered tools, they were able to achieve an amazing result with remarkable speed,” Sarandos stated during a recent earnings call.
This marks the first time AI-generated final footage has been used in a Netflix series. The specific scene refers to a significant moment in episode 6 of The Eternaut, where a building in Buenos Aires collapses.
Because traditional visual effects production can be cost-prohibitive, Sarandos emphasized how using AI isn’t solely about savings, stating, “We remain convinced that AI represents an incredible opportunity to help creators make films and series better, not just cheaper.” This development has raised concerns among writers and artists about the future of their roles in creation, highlighting an ongoing dialogue about the implications of AI in the entertainment industry.
