A newly launched indie game, The Drifter, has garnered exceptional reviews since its release. This pixel art point-and-click adventure invites players to take on the unique role of solving their own murder. Developed by Powerhoof, an indie studio based in Melbourne, Australia, it was brought to life by seasoned developer Dave Lloyd, whose passion for point-and-click games extends back to the early 2000s.
The game has been in development since 2017, but full production only commenced four years later. As of July 17, it is exclusively available on PC through platforms like Steam and GOG, offering a launch price of $16.99 with a typical retail price of $19.99.
In just two days post-launch, The Drifter boasted a ‘Mighty’ rating on OpenCritic, achieving an impressive average score of 86 and a recommendation rate of 93%. Critics praised its engaging narrative, captivating atmosphere, and a thoughtful constellation of puzzles, affirming its position as one of the top-rated titles in recent times. Currently, it has a ‘Very Positive’ rating on Steam with 87.54% positive reviews.
Despite its success, the game is yet to achieve significant commercial traction. Nonetheless, it peaked at 445 concurrent players shortly after its release, landing at 148th on Valve’s ‘Top Sellers’ list.
Powerhoof also revealed plans for a Nintendo Switch port, expected to launch before the end of 2025.
