Valve's Steam Labs Reports a Surge in Generative AI Games
An industry veteran reveals that nearly 20% of all games released in 2025 incorporate generative AI technology.
The number of games on Steam featuring Generative AI is rapidly increasing, with nearly one in five games released this year incorporating such technology. Ichiro Lambe, a veteran in the gaming industry, recently highlighted that roughly 7% of all games on Steam now utilize generative AI in some form. While this technology is gaining ground among developers, there still exists a vocal opposition from artists and gamers who are hesitant to embrace AI in gaming.
The Surge in AI-Driven Games
Lambe noted, “We’ve octupled last year’s figure,” indicating a significant rise in AI-integrated games. Approximately 8,000 games on Steam disclose their use of Generative AI.
- 60% of these disclosures relate to visual assets.
- Other common uses include audio generation and narrative development.
- Notable games leveraging this technology have emerged from indie developers rather than major studios.
Despite the advancements, there remains a concern that these technologies could undermine jobs and creativity in the industry. Some developers refuse to utilize generative AI tools, continuing to advocate for traditional artistry in game development.
