AMD Prepares to Renew AI GPU Exports to China amid US Restrictions

AMD looks set to resume the export of its AI chips to China as US regulations appear to loosen, similar to Nvidia's recent moves.

As the season for selling advanced AI hardware to China heats up, AMD appears ready to join Nvidia in tapping into this lucrative market. AMD has disclosed that it is advancing its license application for MI308 products to China, in light of what seems to be a relaxation of the previous export restrictions.

Industry analyst Patrick Moorhead shared a statement from AMD, indicating that their application is progressing for approval to export MI308 chips to China. This development follows Nvidia’s recent announcement regarding selling its H20 GPUs to the same country, suggesting a broader shift in the US government’s approach to semiconductor exports.

Moreover, a report from Bloomberg has verified that these chips might soon be dispatched to China, coinciding with the Trump administration’s apparent easing of export regulations for powerful US chips.

This initiative aligns with the newly formed trade agreement involving rare earth metals and suggests a significant policy shift, especially considering the previous abrupt tightening of semiconductor exports to China under the same administration. The anticipated openings in trade could benefit AMD considerably, as it aims to translate these approvals into substantive market presence against Nvidia, which currently holds a substantial share of up to 92% in the AI GPU sector.

The lifting of export barriers not only presents a chance for AMD to gain traction in the Chinese market but also complements its growing portfolio of high-performance AI accelerators.
