Following the launch of Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate on July 15, the expansion has drawn disappointing player engagement on Steam. Compared to previous expansions, the player count has been underwhelming.
As part of the new multi-year Fate saga, Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate transports players to the newly introduced location of Kepler, orbiting the outer solar system. The expansion introduces intriguing new characters and a mystery involving the Nine, including Orin the Lost, previously known as the Emissary of the Nine.
Despite presenting new content and leveling features, it appears that many players might not be returning from The Final Shape expansion.
Dismal Launch Numbers
As reported, Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate peaked at 99,193 concurrent players on Steam during its launch, which quickly dropped to around 89,000 players the following day. This performance marks it as one of the least successful expansions in Destiny 2 history, significantly lagging behind the The Final Shape, which garnered a player peak of 314,000.
The drop in player interest could reflect a general sense of fatigue and multiple issues facing Bungie. However, the upcoming expansion Destiny 2: Renegades, scheduled for December 2025, aims to revitalize the game’s community and should be watched closely for its impact on player retention.
