New Insights on Generative AI Usage in Upcoming Steam Games

A recent report reveals that around 20% of Steam games scheduled for release in 2025 leverage Generative AI technology, sparking discussions within the gaming community.

A recent report indicates that 1 in 5 Steam games coming out in 2025 are utilizing Generative AI. While this technology is relatively novel, numerous developers have swiftly adopted it for various roles. Most of the highlighted Steam games that have integrated this technology are independent and developed on smaller budgets.

In January 2024, Valve mandated that developers disclose the employment of artificial intelligence during the game development process. The collected data revealed intriguing insights into the proliferation of AI in the industry, showcasing how it’s being implemented.

Some developers remain opposed to the usage of Generative AI, yet its application continues to grow, predominantly within independent gaming development. According to a report from Totally Human Media, around 7,818 games on Steam have acknowledged the inclusion of Generative AI, accounting for roughly 7% of all titles available on the platform. Just shy of 20% of all newly released games on Steam in 2025 have reported using this technology. This marks a striking rise of nearly 700% in just a year.

Insights from this report also highlight how this technology is being utilized, primarily for visual asset creation (2D/3D models, textures, etc.), which constitutes about 60% of the disclosures by developers. Other significant usages include audio and text generation, along with marketing content and even code generation.

For example, My Summer Car is the most recognized title disclosing the use of Generative AI, attributed to the digital paintings created for in-game use. This brings forth questions on gamers’ acceptability towards minimal AI usage, as evidenced by the game’s ongoing popularity and positive reviews. Conversely, titles like InZOI provide in-game AI tools allowing players to design unique outfits and textures, demonstrating an intriguing shift in player preferences toward more AI-integrated experiences.
