Skyrim Co-Lead Designer Discusses Normie Aspects of Elder Scrolls 6

Kurt Kuhlmann, a former Bethesda designer, reflects on the expected conventionality of Elder Scrolls 6 compared to its predecessors.

In recent discussions, Kurt Kuhlmann, who previously worked as a co-lead designer on Skyrim and a longstanding contributor at Bethesda, shared insights about the anticipated direction for Elder Scrolls 6. He expressed that while he values the creative potential of the Elder Scrolls series, he believes the upcoming title will veer toward a more mainstream aesthetic rather than the eccentric charm seen in its predecessors.

“I think Todd in particular gravitates not towards the weird stuff. I do. Like, Morrowind… Michael and I had done a lot of brainstorming on that, and obviously, it’s got the Dune vibes, and the Dark Crystal vibes. I love that stuff. I would have definitely put more in [Oblivion] if I could have.”
“Eu achei que Todd, em particular, não se inclina para as coisas estranhas. Eu me inclino. Como, Morrowind… Michael e eu fizemos muito brainstorming sobre isso, e, obviamente, tem as vibrações de Dune e Dark Crystal. Eu adoro esse tipo de coisa. Eu definitivamente teria colocado mais em [Oblivion] se pudesse.”

Kuhlmann’s comments stemmed from a broader conversation about changing design philosophies, especially with big studios now under corporate umbrellas. He acknowledges that titles crafted under strict commercial guidelines might sacrifice some of the creativity that defined the earlier games. Kuhlmann also noted his uncertainty about the creative decisions being made for Elder Scrolls 6, as he shared, “They’re making something different than what I would have done.”

“Eles estão criando algo diferente do que eu teria feito.”

Despite his skepticism, Kuhlmann remains hopeful that elements of the unique lore and depth of older games will persist, even as the gaming market shifts toward broader appeal and excitement around forthcoming releases.
