Daniel Knight, the developer of the acclaimed horror game Phasmophobia, shared that a quest from CD Projekt Red’s The Witcher 3 played a crucial role in reigniting the game’s development which was nearly abandoned. Released in 2020, Phasmophobia has now sold over 25 million copies worldwide, establishing itself as one of the most successful horror games ever.
Since its launch, Knight’s genre-defining co-op horror title has remained in early access, benefiting from continuous support from its developers at Kinetic Games. The most recent significant update, Chronicle, rolled out in June and revamped several core mechanics.
In an interview with Eurogamer, Knight explained that a side quest titled “Devil by the Well” in The Witcher 3 provided him with essential ideas for advancing his project. He admitted that he felt close to giving up during its early phases as a solo developer, tackling a ghost-hunting theme aimed at multiplayer experiences. The creativity he derived from CD Projekt Red’s game pushed him to persist.
Fans looking forward to more updates can anticipate Phasmophobia’s Horror 2.0 release, projected for sometime in 2026, which aims to overhaul the game significantly.
