Sloclap's Rematch: Developers Discover the Game's Essence Through Internal Play

Insights reveal that many Rematch developers, like players, were initially indifferent to soccer, finding unexpected enthusiasm through competitive play.

The multiplayer soccer title Rematch marks a significant shift for Sloclap, known for action games like Absolver and Sifu. Surprisingly, it’s attracting a diverse audience beyond soccer enthusiasts, with about 37,000 concurrent players on Steam.

CEO Pierre Tarno noted that initial data reveals most Rematch players lean towards competitive gaming rather than following football closely. He mentioned, “Loads of people in the team don’t really care about football at all” but found newfound excitement during internal competitions, stating, “I don’t give a shit about football, but this really struck something in me.”

Tarno explained that the aspects of teamwork and strategy create appeal for those unfamiliar with soccer. With time, he anticipates more traditional sports fans will try Rematch, but stresses that the main audience currently consists of gamers who may not follow soccer extensively.

This unique blend of gaming dynamics seems to resonate well with a broad audience, possibly defining a new genre in sports gaming.
