Kurt Margenau, a game director at Naughty Dog, recently likened The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered’s Chronological mode to Christopher Nolan’s Memento. Margenau, a seasoned developer at Naughty Dog who has previously contributed to various titles like Uncharted: The Lost Legacy and The Last of Us Part 2, is now involved in the studio’s upcoming project, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, alongside its prominent head, Neil Druckmann.
Not long ago, The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered received an update for both PS5 and PC, introducing a new Chronological mode alongside some nostalgic Uncharted-themed skins. This feature allows players to experience the entire game story in order, making it accessible in a linear format.
In his explanation, Margenau stated that the team has been fascinated by the concept of a mode similar to special DVD editions of Nolan’s Memento, which let audiences view the storyline in strict chronological sequence. These DVD editions often include a secret recut of the film that rearranges the timeline of events. Margenau compared this alternate version of Memento with The Last of Us Part 2’s new mode, emphasizing that both provide a sequential perspective on a complex narrative.
Margenau also noted that while the new update aims to celebrate The Last of Us franchise’s recent achievements, the reactions toward the Chronological mode have been mixed. Critics suggest that the focus should shift towards new ventures, arguing that the mode diminishes the unique non-linear storytelling of The Last of Us Part 2. Nevertheless, many fans have expressed excitement for the new feature, appreciating the opportunity to reconsider the game.
As more players explore this mode, it will be intriguing to observe how the broader audience embraces it in the coming days.
