Closure of Romero Games Following Microsoft Funding Withdrawal
Romero Games has shut down after Microsoft pulled funding just a day after meetings with the studio, leading to over 100 job losses.
Romero Games has reported that it is exploring other funding avenues, but for now, the studio appears to have shut its doors for good.
According to TheJournal.ie and other outlets, which sourced this information from former employees, Microsoft has terminated its financial support for the studio. This abrupt action coincided with a meeting that took place just a day prior, where there was no mention of impending layoffs.
An affected employee shared, “We had meetings with the publisher the day before this happened, and there was no mention of it.”
Despite earlier signs of a secure project, over 100 jobs have been impacted due to the closure, as records indicate Romero Games directly employed 42 staff members while external collaborators were also involved.
While there were signs of distress at the company amidst Microsoft’s recent patterns of layoffs and studio shutdowns, the sudden nature of this news has taken many by surprise. A lingering thread of hope remains as Romero Games attempts to secure funding for its projects and potentially re-launch.
