Insights from the Patch 8 Testers
Baldur’s Gate 3 is generating excitement with its upcoming Patch 8, which introduces a variety of new subclasses. Recent communications from stress testers show a significant transformation in the Eldritch Knight subclass.
Originally seen as merely satisfactory, the Eldritch Knight may become overwhelming in the upcoming patch. This change notably relies on existing game mechanics and a new spell to enhance its capabilities:
- Booming Blade: This cantrip, now available in Patch 8, delivers extra damage and a debuff to opponents.
- Improved Extra Attack: At level 11, Fighters can make three weapon attacks in a single turn.
- War Magic: This ability allows an Eldritch Knight to attack using a bonus action after casting a cantrip.
In the traditional tabletop game, casting Booming Blade typically requires using your entire action for that round. However, in Baldur’s Gate 3, testers noted that players can utilize Extra Attack with Booming Blade, leading to a potential four attacks in a round—a feat usually achievable only by dual-wielding builds.
While this build seems overwhelmingly powerful, testers and enthusiasts highlight concerns about the balance of the game. The combination of Booming Blade with the Eldritch Knight’s abilities could result in a class that significantly outshines others, prompting calls for a nerf.
In tabletop Dungeons & Dragons, the Bladesinging subclass offers a unique way to balance spellcasting with melee attacks. Something similar could be beneficial for the Eldritch Knight, allowing players to enjoy distinct gameplay styles without overpowering the class.
Even in its simplest form, an unbalanced build might not spoil the fun of Baldur’s Gate 3, but moderation and balance are crucial for maintaining an enjoyable gaming experience for all players.
