MindsEye Executive Points to 'Sabotage' Amid Development Crisis and Planned Re-Launch
The development team at MindsEye is facing layoffs while plans are made for a potential re-launch amid ongoing controversies.
The situation at MindsEye studio Build a Rocket Boy has taken another bizarre twist with founder Leslie Benzies communicating to employees through video chat. As reported by IGN, Benzies has pledged a “re-launch” for MindsEye, aiming for a comeback despite the impending layoffs threatening the entire studio.
Layoffs at Build a Rocket Boy were first revealed last week, initiating a legally required 45-day consultation period in the UK when more than 100 employees are at risk. While the studio referred to these changes as “internal adjustments,” they hinted at layoffs in the works.
Benzies, widely known for his role in the Grand Theft Auto series before leaving Rockstar in 2014, seems to have larger aspirations than simple corrections. On July 2, he informed the staff that they would aim for a significant comeback and relaunch of MindsEye, suggesting ambitions beyond the current circumstances.
What’s more intriguing is Benzies’ accusations of “internal and external saboteurs” behind the studio’s struggles, a sentiment echoed in previous statements by co-CEO Mark Gerhard, who suggested there is a “concerted effort” against the studio, indirectly hinting at Rockstar’s involvement.
The credibility of the alleged sabotage remains in question as the game’s poor reception is documented, raising skepticism about its prospects for a turnaround compared to titles like Cyberpunk 2077 or No Man’s Sky, which succeeded after problematic launches.
Currently, interest in MindsEye seems to be dwindling, with only 26 players recorded on Steam three weeks post-launch. Build a Rocket Boy has yet to make any public comments regarding these issues, leaving many curious about the future and the relaunch strategies.
