Blizzard Halts Development of Warcraft Rumble: Staff Cuts Follow

Blizzard Entertainment ceases new content creation for Warcraft Rumble, resulting in substantial layoffs, as the game fails to meet performance expectations.

Blizzard has decided to stop producing new content for their real-time strategy game Warcraft Rumble just under a year after its launch. The company confirmed that the game will still host in-game events and receive bug fixes, yet the halt on further development has been described as an “extremely hard decision.”

“Warcraft Rumble began development nine years ago as a love letter to Azeroth and launched back in 2023, reflecting input from enthusiastic players around the globe and the efforts of a passionate team—some of whom continue to support Rumble or other Blizzard games, and some we’ve had to sadly part ways with,” Blizzard stated.

Despite efforts to improve the game following player feedback, Blizzard noted that the achievements were insufficient to ensure the game’s sustainability. The cessation of new content development correlates with larger layoffs at Blizzard as part of a wider reduction across the gaming division, affecting part of the 9,000 jobs cut by Microsoft that day.

Additionally, numerous layoffs were reported among the Warcraft Rumble team, with former developers indicating that “most of the team” had been let go. Blizzard faces challenges as it also cancelled other projects and restructured its workforce, resulting in significant changes to its operational strategy.
