A new update from Steam has rolled out a performance monitor, previously in beta, that transforms the platform’s traditional frame counter into a feature-rich tool. This new display option can be activated through Steam settings and overlays the game screen, presenting insights into your rig’s performance and its effects on gameplay.
Features of the Performance Monitor
- The overlay presents frame rate data and distinguishes generated frames from technologies like DLSS and FSR, allowing users to assess their impacts on performance.
- Enthusiasts can dive deeper, examining min and max frame metrics plus a graphical representation of frame rates over time. This closely resembles the performance overlay found on the Steam Deck.
- Alongside frame rates, the monitor tracks CPU performance, GPU metrics, and system memory usage.
Despite existing methods for monitoring performance, having it built into Steam facilitates pinpointing bottlenecks seamlessly, as experienced by one user who mistakenly altered a minor graphic setting in Stalker 2, resulting in an unexpected GPU overload.
Valve represents this tool as an initial measure to assist users in understanding their gaming system’s effectiveness, with expectations of enriching the monitor with additional functionalities in future updates.
