In the ongoing success of Rematch, which boasts around 33,000 players on Steam at the time of writing, the developers delve into the critical aspects of the ball’s design in the game. During a conversation with Evan Lahti from PCGamer, co-founder Pierre Tarno and lead designer Dylan Allen discussed how the game’s mechanics are shaped.
“There are multiple ways to approach it,” Allen remarked, highlighting Rematch as more than a sports game—it also incorporates fighting game elements. This blend influences how player duels unfold, often evoking nostalgia for players of Absolver.
He stressed the importance of game feel, mentioning, “Whenever you hit the ball, you want it to feel good, right?” This sentiment reflects the developers’ dedication to refining each aspect of player experience, particularly the ball’s physics.
Tarno cautioned that should any adjustments be necessary, they would be carried out thoughtfully, considering player feedback during the tweaking process. “When it bounces on the ground, how high does it bounce back up?” he posed, emphasizing the intricate considerations that come with each modification to gameplay mechanics.
Tarno concluded with a commitment to maintaining this balance, adding that any changes must be made with caution to avoid disrupting player expectations and gameplay dynamics.
