Mexican President Urges Google Maps to Retain Gulf of Mexico's Name

Claudia Sheinbaum, the Mexican president, formally requests that Google Maps does not change the name of the Gulf of Mexico, humorously suggesting North America be renamed 'América Mexicana'.

In a world where absurdities abound, today’s highlight comes from the request of Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum to Google, asking them to refrain from renaming the Gulf of Mexico. Notably, Sheinbaum also light-heartedly proposed a name change for North America to ‘América Mexicana’.

This request follows the announcement from the US about a potential name change for the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, as stated by Donald Trump in his inaugural address.

Google clarified that their maps reflect local names, demonstrating their commitment to the existing naming conventions between countries. Sheinbaum’s letter emphasized that international law dictates that the name of the Gulf cannot be changed unilaterally and that the United States only has jurisdiction over its own territorial waters.

Furthermore, she quipped about her initiative for Mexican America to be featured on maps, showcasing her sense of humor amidst the serious implications of geographical nomenclature.

Ultimately, Sheinbaum asserted the perspective of Mexico: “For us, it is still the Gulf of Mexico, and for the entire world, it is still the Gulf of Mexico.”
